Once in a while, even for us health conscious types, we need to indulge in a comforting treat. This is our family favorite.
Sprinkle 2 pkg. yeast over 1/2 C. warm water in small bowl.
In a larger bowl, pour 3/4 C. scalded dairy or soy milk, and add 1/4 C. sugar with 1 Tsp. salt. Blend, then cool to lukewarm. Stir the yeast mix well and add to the milk mix. Stir in 1/3 C. room temperature Crisco or other soft vegetable shortening, 2 eggs or equivalent Eggbeaters, and 3-1/2 C. SIFTED all-purpose flour. Beat vigorously until the batter is smooth.
Cover with a towel and let rise 30 minutes in a warm area away from drafts. Stir down the batter, recover the bowl and let rest 30 minutes.
Heat good quality frying oil, like Canola or corn oil, to 350 degrees F. (test with a frying thermometer) in a heavy, deep frying pan: at least 2 inches deep. Drop batter carefully from teaspoons into the hot fat. Turn the doughnuts when edges begin to show color. Fry until golden brown. Remove immediately with slatted pancake turner and drain on brown paper bags or heavy paper towel. Roll in sifted powdered sugar if desired.

The original book with this post’s title, published in 1996, by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, suggested that our blood types can be predictably disposed to specific diseases and food allergies. There has been a great deal of controversy, pro and con, to his suppositions. For critical views on the “diet”, which is a plan for what foods should be eaten to best compliment your blood type, along with menu suggestions to help you lose weight, please see information amd suggested reading in Wikipedia under this title name.
However, I am a blood type “0″, and have loosely followed the author’s eating plan for my type on and off for years, with some success. Type “0″ people have been proven over the last few decades in many medical circles to be prone to stomach ulcers, stomach cancer and several digestive problems, including IBS and Crohn’s Disease. This is also stated under the “0″ blood type in Dr. D’Adamo’s books. Why am I posting this information for us who suffer digestive problems? It is another avenue for us to explore in our lifetime search for relief.
Knowledge is truly empowering in our quest for optimum health.
One of the main suggestions he makes is to eliminate wheat and oats along with dairy and many other foods, consumed on a large scale by most Americans. But we are not alone. Millions of people worldwide have wheat, corn, oat, dairy and other common food allergies or sensitivities. Since I have long found that includes myself, I will be posting a lot more information to compliment my archived posts on these subjects:
alternate grains, dairy substitutes and other possible trigger foods as well as tips on how to determine if one or more of these foods could be causing some of your suffering. For those who believe they too are being sabotaged by many of the very foods we are all advised to eat to increase the quality of our personal health, we must research every avenue for understanding and relief.
Healthy eating,
Marianne
